NED Conversations

NED conversations is series of interviews and philosophical conversations conducted by NED members

# Mary Graham in conversation with Freya Mathews: On relationality

The aim of this initial conversation was to explore the concept of relationality from the sometimes complementary, sometimes contrasting perspectives of Australian Aboriginal thought on the one hand and Western ecological philosophy on the other: where do these two perspectives on relationality overlap and how, if at all, do they differ?

Mary is a Kombu-merri elder from Queensland’s Gold Coast region and she is Associate Adjunct Professor of the School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland. She has worked extensively as an advocate and researcher across a wide range of Aboriginal organizations.

Freya is an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Latrobe University.

# Piers Stephen in conversation with Freya Mathews: On philosophical pragmatism

Sparked by the recent publication of the Eco-modernist Manifesto (also dubbed Eco-Pragmatists) Piers and Freya unpacked the philosophical notion of “pragmatism” in environmental philosophy. This conversation was recorded via Skype.

Piers (Professor, The University of Georgia) is an environmental philosopher with a background in the history of ideas in moral and political philosophy as well as in literature.

Freya is an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Latrobe University.
